Back to School Safety Tips

  • If you’re walking your kids to school, stay on the sidewalk (if there is one). If you’re on a street with no sidewalk, then walk facing the traffic. Be sure to always stop and look for oncoming traffic before crossing the street! Always cross at a crosswalk or intersection, never in the middle of the road.
  • Additionally, if your child is biking to school, ensure they wear a properly-fitted helmet and bright clothing. Placing reflective tape on their bicycle is a great idea if they will be staying late for after-school programs.
  • For kids who ride the bus, teaching them how to safely get on and off the bus is important! They should stand far back from the curb, at least six feet, and walk far in front of the bus (about 10 feet) if they need to cross the road. The bus driver and kids should always be able to see each other!
  • Back to school can also be an exciting time for teens who may be driving themselves to school for the first time! To stay safe on the road, the car shouldn’t move until everyone is buckled up, and always follow the speed limit! For teenage drivers, learning to put phones and other devices in an inaccessible location is a great habit to learn.
