Winterize Your Lawn Pump ~ The Southern Circular’s Featured Tip of the Month

Winterize Your Lawn Pump

Calling all tenants – have you prepared your lawn pump for the winter season yet? This basic tenant responsibility only takes a few minutes. In order to ensure that your lawn pump is working optimally for the spring and summer seasons, now is the time to do so! Water expands when it freezes, and if your pump still has water in it when temperatures drop below freezing the pump can become damaged. Preserve the life of your lawn pump with these few simple steps. Read on below for more information on how to winterize your lawn pump!

What You’ll Need:

  • A heavy duty trash bag
  • Wrench
  • Spray gasket lubricant

How to Winterize Your Lawn Pump

  • Shut off the water for the sprinkler pump before cleaning. Remove the cover from the pump and clean out any debris.
  • Before reconnecting the pump to the water, turn the pump on for 1-2 minutes or until all of the water is clear of the sprinkler lines.
  • As soon all the water is drained, shut off the pump. Don’t leave any water inside the pump, as this can cause damage when temperatures drop below freezing!
  • Disconnect the discharge line from the lawn pump so the remaining water drains easily.
  • Remove the inlet line that goes into the pump, allowing the water to drain from that end.
  • Use your wrench to open the drain valve on the bottom of the pump. Let the drain valve stay open all the way through winter!
  • Once the pump is clear of all water, spray all gaskets with lubricant.Winterize Your Lawn Pump
