What if a Hurricane is headed our way?

Be Prepared

It is definitely that time of year! With Irma barreling toward the States, we are reminded that the coast can be in the path of a destructive force. We all need to pay attention to the updates and prepare, prepare, prepare! Here are just a few tips, but be sure to check out your local emergency management agency for more thorough info.

First of all, be aware of evacuation notices and just in case, plan your evacuation route.

Second, stock up. Stock up on water, non-perishables, canned goods, batteries etc. Here is a list of some additional recommended items:

  • Flashlight
  • Candles
  • Matches
  • Plastic Trash Bags
  • Scissors
  • Can Opener (manual)
  • Gasoline
  • Waterproof containers
  • Coolers (two: one for drinks/one for food)
  • Medications and First Aid Items
  • Sunscreen
  • Soap
  • Adhesive Tape

Next, prepare your property. Bring in outdoor furniture, board windows and secure anything loose.

Prepare to not have a phone for a while. Landlines usually go out during a strong storm, but some people are surprised to learn that cell phones often lose reception during storms as well. It’s important to prepare for this, and you might want to inform any family members or friends that you might be harder to reach.

Also, prepare to lose power. The power might flicker on and off during a storm, or you might lose it completely. If a fallen tree branch falls on a power line or a breaker is struck by lightning, you might be out of power for a few hours or a few days. Have candles and ice on hand in case you need to provide light and save any food in the refrigerator. A generator is a great option!

Hopefully, we won’t have to initiate our own hurricane plans, but, again, be ready!
